LGA Competition Hair Styles
Supplies
- Hair spray
- Gel
- Spray bottle with water
- Yarn or Dental floss
- Small rubber bands
- Comb and brush
- Plastic needle
- Foam curlers (if not wearing a bun)
- Bun cover
- Competition Hair Tie
- NO BOBBY PINS (for the safety of all gymnasts)
Directions
- There are two ways to start with the hair styling. One is to dampen clean dry hair with a squirt bottle or start with wet freshly washed hair.
- Decide on the style you would like to wear for the meet. If you choose to have a pony tail that is curly you will want to start with dry hair. If you choose to do another style like checker board or French braids you may want to start with damp hair.
- For checker board:
- Damp CLEAN hair
- Comb hair
- Generously apply gel
- Spray hair spray
- Comb hair again
- Create first row of hair in rubber bands along forehead side of head
- Make 3 or more sections and place the rubber bands
- Create a second row of hair sections
- Line the sections up mid way between the sections of the first row
- Incorporate half of the rubber banded section from the first row with the adjacent section in the second row and place rubber band
- Repeat until row is complete
- If space allows you may do a third or more rows…
- Pull all hair into a ponytail with rubber band
- Generously apply hair spray
- FOLLOW BUN DIRECTIONS BELOW
- For small braids
- Damp CLEAN hair
- Comb hair
- Generously apply gel
- Spray hair spray
- Comb hair again
- Create first row of hair along forehead side of head
- Make 3 or more sections
- Braid each section and rubber band the end
- Pull all hair into a ponytail with rubber band
- Generously apply hair spray
- FOLLOW BUN DIRECTIONS BELOW
- For Ponytail with curls
- DRY CLEAN hair
- Comb hair
- Generously apply gel
- Spray hair spray
- Comb hair again
- Pull all hair into a ponytail with rubber band
- Apply competition hair tie
- Spray ponytail with water lightly
- Place several curlers in pony tail
- Apply hair spray
- Allow several hours to dry
- BUN DIRECTIONS
- Braid pony tail
- Apply rubber band to the end
- Thread plastic needle with yarn or dental floss which is about double the length of the ponytail
- Secure the thread to the bottom of the braided ponytail
- Sew through the ponytail toward the top of the ponytail
- Weave thread through the top rubber band
- Pull tight
- Wrap braid in circular fashion around top of ponytail
- Sew the braid into place be sure to catch the main rubber band as you go
- Apply hair spray
- Place bun cover if you are using one
- Place competition hair tie over bun cover
